Ice on Your AC — Why It Freezes and What To Do

Ice on the copper line, the indoor coil or the outdoor unit — always caused by one of two things, and neither of them is 'it's cold'.

Turn the cooling off and run the fan only. Continuing to run a frozen system can send liquid refrigerant back to the compressor, which turns a moderate repair into a major one.

An air conditioner freezing in Florida heat looks absurd, and the explanation is genuinely counter-intuitive: ice forms because the coil is getting too little heat, not too much cold. The coil is designed to sit just above freezing while a specific volume of warm household air passes over it. Reduce that airflow, or reduce the refrigerant that carries the heat away, and the coil temperature falls below freezing. Condensation on it turns to ice, the ice blocks airflow further, and the whole thing accelerates.

So there are really only two root causes: not enough air, or not enough refrigerant. Everything else is a version of one of those. Not enough air means a clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, a collapsed or blocked duct, closed registers, or undersized returns. Not enough refrigerant means a leak. Which one it is matters enormously, because adding refrigerant to a system that froze from low airflow makes the icing worse and can damage the compressor.

Before anyone visits, the ice has to be gone — a technician cannot read pressures or measure a temperature split through a block of ice. Switch the thermostat to OFF for cooling and FAN to ON. The blower will run without cooling and thaw the coil, usually in one to three hours. Put towels down; there will be water.

Before you call anyone

Check these first — they cost nothing

  • Switch cooling OFF and the fan to ON so the coil can thaw — do this first
  • Put towels under the indoor unit; a thawing coil produces a lot of water
  • Check and replace the air filter while it thaws
  • Open every supply register and clear anything blocking a return grille
  • Once fully thawed, run it again and watch — if it freezes again quickly, stop and call
  • Do not chip, scrape or hammer the ice off; the coil and lines damage easily

A clogged air filter

The cheapest and most common cause, and the reason the first thing we ask is when it was last changed. Worth ruling out before paying anyone.

A blower wheel loaded with dust

A wheel packed with debris moves a fraction of its rated air even with a clean filter. It is invisible without opening the cabinet and it is very common in older systems.

Low refrigerant charge from a leak

Less refrigerant means lower pressure, which means a colder coil. This is the second root cause, and it needs the leak found rather than the charge topped up.

Crushed, disconnected or undersized ductwork

Particularly on the return side. The blower cannot get enough air back to the coil no matter how clean everything is.

A failing blower motor

Turning slower than rated, so airflow drops even with a clean wheel and clean filter.

Running the system on an unusually cool night

Rare in Florida but real: running cooling when the outdoor temperature is very low can drop the coil below freezing on its own.

How long does it take to thaw?

Usually one to three hours with the fan running, longer if the coil has iced up solid. Do not try to speed it up with a heat gun or a hair dryer — coils and copper lines are easy to damage and expensive to replace.

It thawed and now it works. Is it fixed?

No. Thawing removes the symptom, not the cause. Unless a genuinely filthy filter was the whole story, it will freeze again — and each freeze-thaw cycle risks liquid refrigerant returning to the compressor.

Why is there ice on the outdoor unit instead?

On a heat pump running in heating mode, some frost on the outdoor coil is normal and the defrost cycle clears it. Ice that persists means a defrost fault. On a system running in cooling, ice outdoors points at low charge.
