A heat pump in Florida works harder than almost any other piece of domestic equipment. It runs nearly year-round on the cooling side, then switches direction for a handful of weeks and is expected to work first time. Maintenance that only ever looks at the cooling mode misses half the machine, which is why the first cold night of the year generates so many calls.

So a proper heat pump service tests both directions. Reversing valve operation, defrost cycle initiation and termination, auxiliary heat staging and lockout, and the outdoor sensor that decides when defrost is needed. Those are the components that sit unused for most of the year and are therefore the ones most likely to have quietly failed since you last needed them.

The rest is the same discipline we apply to any system, done with instruments rather than impressions: coil condition and cleaning, refrigerant charge verified, capacitor values measured against rating, contactor condition, blower and airflow, condensate drain and safety float. How often should a Florida heat pump be serviced?

Twice a year is ideal for equipment that runs both modes — once before cooling season and once before the cold nights. Once a year is a reasonable minimum, and near the coast we would strongly favour twice because of salt.

Is this different from an AC tune-up?

Yes, and it is the reason this page exists. A cooling-only tune-up never tests the reversing valve, the defrost cycle or the auxiliary heat staging — the three things that decide whether your heating works and what it costs.
