Thermostat Repair

AC Thermostat Repair

Before condemning the thermostat, we prove it's the thermostat — a lot of 'thermostat faults' are wiring or control-board faults.

A modern wall thermostat with a circular display

A blank thermostat is one of the most misdiagnosed symptoms in the trade. The thermostat is the visible thing, so it gets blamed — but a thermostat is powered by the air handler, and a blank screen very often means a tripped condensate float switch, a blown low-voltage fuse on the control board, or a transformer that has failed. Replacing the thermostat in those cases changes nothing except the invoice.

So we test before we replace: verify 24V at the thermostat, check the control board fuse and transformer, check the float switch and safety chain, and confirm the wiring is intact and terminated correctly. If the thermostat itself has genuinely failed, we replace it and configure the replacement properly. If it has not, you get the actual repair instead.

Common thermostat symptoms

  • A completely blank or dead display
  • The display reading a temperature clearly different from the room
  • The system not responding to setting changes
  • Short cycling driven by the thermostat rather than the equipment
  • Heat running when cooling is called for on a heat pump
  • Buttons or touchscreen not responding

What the diagnosis covers

  • 24V supply verified at the thermostat before anything is condemned
  • Control board fuse and transformer testing
  • Condensate float switch and safety chain check
  • Thermostat wiring continuity and termination check
  • Replacement and full reconfiguration where the thermostat has actually failed

Thermostat Repair — common questions

My screen is blank — is the thermostat dead?

Often not. A blank screen frequently means a tripped float switch or a blown low-voltage fuse at the air handler. That is a cheaper fix, and it is the first thing we check.
