AC Blower Cleaning
AC Blower Wheel Cleaning
The single most overlooked cause of weak airflow — a blower wheel packed with dust it can no longer move air through.

A squirrel-cage blower wheel moves air by catching it in dozens of small curved fins. When those fins pack with dust — and after years of Florida humidity the dust becomes a felted layer rather than a dusting — the fins lose their shape and the wheel simply stops catching air. The motor still spins at full speed. The vents still make noise. But the volume of air reaching the rooms can drop by a third or more.
It is one of the most commonly misdiagnosed problems in the trade, because low airflow produces symptoms that look exactly like low refrigerant: poor cooling, a coil that ices up, and long run times. We check static pressure and pull the wheel to inspect it before anyone touches a set of gauges. Cleaning a blower wheel properly means removing it, not spraying at it through the access panel.
Signs of a dirty blower wheel
- Weak airflow from every vent, not just distant ones
- The indoor coil freezing repeatedly with a correct refrigerant charge
- A noticeable rise in run times with no change in the weather
- Rattling or vibration from the air handler as the wheel loses balance
- Visible dust build-up on the blower housing
What the service includes
- Static pressure and airflow measurement before and after
- Blower wheel removal and full off-wheel cleaning
- Blower housing and motor compartment cleaning
- Motor bearing and capacitor check
- Reinstallation with balance and rotation verified

Can't the wheel just be sprayed in place?
Cleaning in place moves the dirt around and leaves the fins loaded. Doing it properly means pulling the wheel, which is why the airflow difference afterwards is usually obvious immediately.
